We've been passing Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area since...forever. It's right by I-80, the main highway connecting Northern California and Nevada. Some waterfowl and herons are still there, seemingly oblivious to the traffic right next to them. When they leave, the fields will be turned back into rice fields - paddies. What a pretty thing to photograph during sunset, right?

I've been massively uploading and flooding friends and family with more photos because I can't just keep those to myself. Only separating the whole chunk of my memories into thematic albums allows me to show them as they deserve.

I am not showcasing my photography skills but merely sharing the breathtaking beauty of the country.

The Fiordlands are a region where you could spend 2 months wondering around with your mouth open. I can only recommend cruises in Doubtful and Milford Sound (even though we strongly dislike organized tourism), especially the overnight trip in Milford Sound, which will occupy #1 spot among our activities in Fiordlands.

I can't tell much about the West Coast of South Island, we only stopped for night in Franz Josef Glacier area, as we were heading south towards the Fiordlands.

Catlins Coast (south of the South) welcomed us with extremely windy and chilly weather, nevertheless, forest hikes around waterfalls, gorgeous coastal scenery and wildlife made up for it! Even for a terrible hostel in Owaka and the rain!

There was no time to place a rose by the ruined cathedral in Christchurch, as instructed by my friend Suzie, we only had 25 min to get to the airport from the downtown.

We certainly did rush through many places!

I'm finally getting close to having my photos from our January trip sorted, GPS tagged, and somewhat processed. Simultaneously, I am proccessing my mental images from this beautiful country, who knows how long THAT's gonna take!

Abundant EVERYWHERE! Sitting, laying, huddling together - they will forever be one of three things which would pop in my mind when you say New Zealand. They seemed a bit afraid and curious at the same time. Whenever we stopped on the side of the road they would scatter very quickly, then paused and watched. Their hair is very greasy, even that of little baby lamb.
Did you know that there is more sheep in NZ than people? Surprisingly, it's not easy to find lamb on menus in restaurants, supposedly the meat is expensive there.

Fern

Probably the most recognized symbol of the country. You could find the fern logo on merchandise, guides, on company logos, etc...

Some fern grows tall, into graceful and mysterious plants, which you could easily mistaken for palm trees. Others can be really small, showing funny, caterpillar-like spirals. Add deep green moss, covering the ground like a carpet, fallen logs and even tall trees.

I promised some presets (yes, there is more to come!), didn't I?

Here are two versions of "Hollywood". It was designed to give washed-out, vintage look of buildings of the early movie-making town, - hence the name.
It will look best on darker photos and it is not very suitable for portraits
(the H.-contrast, maybe, depending on the picture).

Santa Barbara trip 3

I really don't understand how did that happen - my girl celebrated her 20th birthday!

The time spent there feels so relaxing and very "Southern California". Unseasonably warm weather surprised me - I was baking in my fall outfits.
And as always, the drive along the coast on Hwy 1 is worth the time.

The area of this coastal region is really interesting. Due to very strict, environmentally conscious building code, the houses appear inconspicuous, as if blending into the surroundings - which is the intention after all. The style is not something appealing to me but the fact, that the houses fit in so well, is.

The walk along the ragged shore is nothing short of spectacular. Galleries in local town Gualala boast stunning photographs from locate artists - old barns, fences or mysterious forest. Truly a feast for the eyes!

Four days were not enough for me to take pictures I wanted.

Trip to Bodega Bay

The sole purpose of the trip was to put some miles on my husband's new Ducati bike before its scheduled service, model name: Diavel. Very comforting, right? For the peace of mind (meaning that I'm jealous of his new love and wouldn't let him go by himself!), I decided to follow my jet-lagged dear one in the car.

The first stop was one of our favorite Napa wineries (name Sattui), for lunch and some nice Cabernet Sauvignon. Responsibly, we persuaded a couple of young ladies from Canada to share a half of our bottle with us to ease our alcoholic load for the rest of the journey.

We arrived to Bodega Bay just in time to admire the sunset on the coast which, this time of the year, is more than enjoyable. The next day, my rider outbraved thick coastal fog and we drove back to the wine country for more tasting and then home.

Greece 2011 - Mykonos, Delos and Paros

Here is part 2 and 3 of our journey.

Mykonos is a trendy place (the town), with picturesque bars and boutiques in those tiny streets. It has two famous icons - ancient windmills and white pelican Petros (about 30 years old they told me).

Delos is a smaller island just off Mykonos, which was is the hellenistic era a place of great religious importance, and was inhabited (that time) by 40 000 people + 400 000 slaves. Beautiful ruins, if you can say that.

Paros - a bigger but more quiet place, virtually empty in September, if compared to Mykonos or Santorini. It has beautiful beaches and is frequented by windsurfers.

Athens, Greece

I'm posting part 1 (of 4) of photos from our trip to Greece this September.
Two days in Athens (mainland) and two days on each of the islands: Mykonos, Paros and Santorini. Relatively mild September weather was a great plus, although Athens were too dry and hot even for a California girl.

After four previous trips to Greece we could consider ourselves seasoned travelers but still, we got a different taste of the way of life. We landed at 3 am at the airport, checked into the hotel in Pireus (port serving Athens and the part of "fingered" peninsula), only to find that Metro (subway) is on strike. We had to take a bus and fortunately, Acropolis wasn't that far so we were there on time for some beautiful sunrise photos.

For an average visitor, to see Athens in 3 or 4 days is enough. For a crazy person who only photographs in the morning and evening and fills the rest of the day hanging around cafés and tavernas - much more.
(I am not ashamed that one of the high points of our visits to Greece is local food!)
I want to get a photograph of Acropolis, bathing in the morning sun from the opposite hill, and I want to see famous Municipal Cemetery. Oh well, the next time. From Prague, it's only 2.5 hours flight.

Trip to Lake Aloha

My third trip to the lake. Each time we took a differnet route. Each time, my feet were blistered the same.

High points:
- Pacific Crest Trail looks like a highway, really. I said "Hi" so many times! It's easier on the way down, though.
- It's not an easy trail, I was surprised to see so many people of all ages and sizes!!
- I have never seen it so full before, and with snow around! Beautiful!
- not much to add, besides the fact that I took some nice photos.

I have fun doing that. Getting wet and tired, feet blistered, hips hurting. For some reason, the word has spread and hundreds of other individuals want to do the same. The only difference is: I've done it several times already, I know what it is about and still keep coming back. Go figure.

We took friends to Nevada Falls in Yosemite NP. We were really lucky to find a spot for our tent. Recently, the park stopped keeping some of the camping sites for walk-ins, everything is for reservation only and it's booked months in advance.
Getting soaking wet on the Misty Trail is the highlight of the trail. Not so much on the way down, when my body is not being warmed by the steep incline.

After Yosemite, a short stop at South Tufa, on Mono Lake. Just for comparison, here are photos of the area from the last November. Much nicer then, if you ask me.

Is it not too late to post photos from the 4th of July? :-)
We spent about 5 days at Lake Tahoe with friends, celebrating, eating and the usual stuff. Hiking on the snow (partially). Well... walking, Gino the Westie has short limbs.

The Incline Village Beach was packed with people of the fourth and so was the entry to the water - with boats! Here is an idea: drive a boat 3-4 hours (for some) and park it at the beach, together with hundreds of others doing the same. They would have to drag me to be there…we only stopped to say hi to our friends who didn't mind the the sandwich situation.

We ate lake trout cooked within 3 hours after being caught. Bliss!

I can't share our photos from the trip, they are all bad. Well, most of them. But I'm sure I'll go back again and I'll have pictures like for a wall calendar this time.

To be there at the right time

I don't think I get enough of taking photos in San Francisco. I wouldn't dare to claim I was able to get really good pictures, I'm still waiting for THE shot(s). Part of the problem is that the city is two hours drive from us and mostly we are there at the wong time of the day - the mid-day.

This time, we had friends with us (from Europe) who shared (that means with ME) the same thrilling sensation of hunting for good pictures. It was truly a photowalk. We stayed in a motel north of San Francisco so we could walk/drive around the city in late hours.

Love this bunch of people - the same adventurous family that hiked with us in Sierras and had fun scratching and bruising our hand by shucking oysters in Drakes Bay. Hikers and photographers. My kind.

This was our fourth visit to the farm, first time taking the pain of shucking the oysters ourselves. We brought friends as well. It's because we like to watch their faces, contorted with effort and then with not-so-well hidden expression of distaste. It can't discourage me, though. Fresh oysters are too good.
Next time I'm bringing some wine in our super cute picnic basket.

Island Lake

One of our recent trips was a visit to Black Buttes, Tahoe National Forest. Beautiful area in Sierras strewn with numerous lakes, embedded below granite ranges.
We knew the snowpack hasn't melted completely but we didn't expect the trail completely under the snow.

Walking in soft, mushy snow is no fun so we had to turn back pretty soon. Still, we were able to take plenty of gorgeous photos. The whole album is HERE.

I am finally back home (for now). Trying to handle the backlog of posts and photo collections...
Going back to June: when we visited our girl in Santa Barbara, we took beautiful coastal route up north - Highway 1. Ragged, foggy and mostly deserted stretch of the coast, inaccessible from the ocean.
Although visited dozen of times before, I have never seen the coast in bloom before...

We are officially empty-nesters. Our girl moved to Santa Barbara for summer classes and she will finish her second college year there. She is absolutelly thrilled to be there - why shouldn't she? And it's up to us - parents go go down there is we want to see her.

I didn't know what to expect from SB but I must say it's gorgeous!! It is quite colder than where we are, still beautiful, with pretty buildings in Spanish style and lots of lush, subtropical greenery. When you say Santa Barbara, two colors pop into my mind: white and green. Yes, I do associate places with colors :-).

At a local Starbucks, I was inspired by some vintage photos and I made several Lightroom presets, two of them presenting to you today, named Santa Barbara, what else! (see the download link below).
They work especially well with architectural photos, but the portraits as well. I was trying to achieve washed vintage feel, great for exotic buildings and pictures of boats and sea.

As a bonus, I have included pictures from Swedish Midsummer Party at our friends' house, where we stopped on the way to SB.

Rivers in Sierra Nevada (mountain range close to us) are truly a sight, right now. There are even roads covered by the snow and many lakes, normally busy by this time, are still inaccessible. We drove towards Bowman Lake but we were forced to turn back due to snow - and a car stuck in the snow, in one case.

Nevertheless, Yuba is gorgeous (it's pretty any time of the year, anyway), demanding respect for its menacing, rushing power.

I added various shadows to hearts (photomask from the kit above) so they look like hovering in different heights.

University Falls

Yes, we finally made it! This was our third attempt to reach the falls.

The first one - miles and miles wondering in the woods and missing the right trail - which is not marked.

The second - two miles before the place we park our car, there was a fatal accident and road was closed for hours, we took an alternate road.

And finally, we dragged some friends with us and this brought us luck :-)

Popular "swimming hole", a beautiful cascade, some parts not easily accessible, definitely worth it.

Nice 8 miles trip.

Red, White And Blue

I wanted to share with you two layouts from Heather's new kit Red, White And Blue.
I think the elements she made, using her own papers, then cut in her die-cut machine, assembled and scanned again, are exquisite, something very unique, love them!!

On this page (above), I used a photo from Virginia City. It is a picturesque town in Nevada, not too far from Lake Tahoe. Its main street looks about the same as it did in 1860 - saloons, little shops, the place where Mark Twain started writing...

it's extremely popular among Harley Davidson bikers - the nice kind - and it is some sight: the main street lined with about a hundred of bikes, like during Street Vibrations (bikers event in Reno, NV) or on the 4th of July- and yes, DH has a HD but he is not a typical HD biker - he's skinny, no beard, short hair and only rides in good weather :-))

Golden Gate Bridge

I drove over Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco numerous times but never actually walked on it. Maybe, I was discouraged by the look at wind stricken people, wrapping themselves in coats and scarfs. I did too!
I loved using fisheye lens, it gives very interesting results for shots with architectonic details.
Another fascinating thing - hungry seagulls around the fishing boat, waiting for scraps of seafood, or maybe even stealing some!! lol

Lake Clementine

Rains and snowmelt altogether means a lot of water in rivers, dams and lakes around us. Right by city of Auburn, you can see beautiful cascades from spillways on the Lake Clementine. The debris along the upper edge of the dam and on the rocks bellow suggest that the water was much higher, probably just recently. Must have been a sight, the water spilling over the whole lenght of the dam!

How we didn't make it to the University Falls

Some places in Yosemite NP are still closed due to snow conditions. So, instead of planned trip to Yosemite we opted for a day trip to the Georgetown area in Sierras - namely University Falls.
Usually, my husband doesn't need a map on a trip after studying the route beforehand. Plus, he has some sort of GPS built-in his brain. But this time, even a topographic map on his phone wasn't helpful, we just couldn't find the right way. Mind you, no official trail there. The trip that should be just under 6 miles long turned out to be 8 miles and we didn't find the falls.
Well, maybe some other time.

When the light is right and introducing a new category: Freebies

Giddy as a little girlie, I was. I applied a Lightroom preset (my own) the photo and I knew right there that it's gonna work really well with the colors I was using in the layout. I just loved the light.

I MUST add here that the photo is a snapshot from an old scanned video from 1992, which I salvaged. Jagged edges, visible horizontal lines...you might remember before-High-Definition era... no? :-)

I received lots of nice comments about how sweet and peaceful the picture is. Well, what you don't see there is terrible mess around, you don't hear the thumping of little hands and knees, yes, knees...can you imagine babies actually running when crawling???
I wanted to document that peaceful moment when all the growling, squealing and thumping ceased...and all I could hear was barely distinguishable gulps and labored breathing... :-)

Sea of Lavender

I am fortunate to have two kinds of lavender in my garden. One of them is in full bloom at the moment. I already spent considerable time just sitting next to it, on a concrete platform that serves as a carport and is surrounded by sakura trees, spiraea and lavender. Beautiful color combination - dark burgundy, orange and violet!

Did you know that lavender can sing?
Hum, actually. Fascinated, I watch crowds of bees incessantly visiting one blossom after another, their legs heavy with sticky mix of pollen and nectar...what an arduous job!!

I made several observations about bees:

- they tend not to stay in one focal plane from my camera, making the task of focusing my photos nigh impossible
- they are truly hardworking, and how on Earth do they clean their legs?
- they disperse when I approach any shrub they are currently "working on", I feel unwelcome
- I don't think they are aware of their ability to pollenate and to make various products someone else profits from. That's some serious copyright violation
- buzzing of bees makes me happy and hyper and want to do something

I played with various settings - a) manual focus to fixed distance, plus higher aperture value or greater depth of field, b) aperture priority was doing what it could and I was trying to focus. Silly bees wouldn't stay in one place!! Surprisingly, I managed to get better shots using the method b.

Conquering Castle Peak

It was supposed to be a quick snowshoeing trip. The trail was very nice but I was already exhausted long before we made it to the top of Castle Peak (elev. 9100 ft, elevation gain 1800 ft). There, I expressed my worries about dark clouds brewing from the South. "Oh yeah, the models predicted some precipitation..." - was my husband's response.
So I didn't get to enjoy my well deserved time on the top. The sky turned very dark and it started snowing heavily. Our hasty descend changed into a blind run on the tricky terrain. Once on the sheltered side of the range I could relax and started taking pictures again. When we returned to the car I was completely burnt out.

I am behind in posting my layouts. We had friends over who were moving from California to Ohio; they were supposed only to stop here and say good bye. Unfortunately, their fully loaded 27 ft long Budget truck was not up to the task of crossing 8000 ft mountains in a speed higher than 10 miles per hour and they were "stranded" in our house for two days while Budget was trying to find new truck for them and reload all the stuff.
Just guess: do you think it's easy to find pro-movers on Saturday? Think twice. Do you think the pro-movers can fit all the stuff you carefully pack into the new truck? Yeah, sure!
Well, as of today, our friends are safely in Nevada with 2000 more miles yet to be covered.

The scare is over

For the past month I really felt like there was something not so good with me - shortness of breath and I didn't like the moles I have all over my body. I just returned from a skin cancer screening and I'm so relieved everything is OK. Being a healthy lifestyle nut I am it gave me a real scare.
So it's time to address the shortness of breath and either accept I'm not so young anymore or get back in the shape.
Treadmill for dinner. Ok, before dinner. :-)

This years Chinese NY Parade in San Francisco was wet and very cold. We came to the city early and got lost in the Westfield Mall on Market Street taking pictures. To kill time, we decided to go to see the movie Unknown, with Liam Neeson. A good one.

We were lucky to come to the Union Square Park right when the police were closing off the street we came from, so we got a pretty good spot right by the barrier. Mind you, all other streets were packed. Even though it was dark, Geary Street was well lit with some mega-light because the parade was being covered by a TV right there. My only complain: too many policemen and security people blocking my view. Maybe I should have asked the police to move elsewhere?

My 85 mm f/1.8 was wonderful for this but I made a mistake of shooting in Av mode and camera was giving me quite low shutter speed which wasn't enough for the moving people. So I apologize, some photos are blurry. For the next time - when it's not raining, of course - I will go for shutter speed set to 1/200 or 1/250 and auto ISO.

I especially loved the kids taking part in this, if you are patient, take time to look at their faces.
Credit for the photos is half mine, half my dear husband's, he was shooting with a wide lens and a fish eye. In case I didn't mention it before: his speciality is panoramic and 360º photos.

I know, nobody likes this line flashing from a list of credits of a layout, showing a meaningless, impersonal photo. Don't worry, I don't use it that way!
Nevertheless, I have to share my page here, made with new products from Heather T, available at Mscraps today: Simple paper pack and a set of templates Big Lots.
What suits me perfectly is the freedom I have when using the templates, making them my own.

My husband lovingly calls our daughter his "offspring". She is his copy. She only got the color of her hair and eyes from me. I'm content with that. Here, they are having some fun on our boat.
